Baked Spaghetti Sauce

This Baked Spaghetti Sauce recipe will be a great addition to your stockpile of recipes and list of favorite comfort foods! There are many reasons to love this recipe, one of them being that it makes a large batch to produce MULTIPLE meals for a low cost!

This recipe came from my close friend and now sister-in-law Nancy (thank you Nancy), who opened my eyes to this super yummy and nutrient rich recipe. It has been modified as the years have gone by, therefore, I will give you the base and you will be able to add the spices and other seasonings that you love to it!

Let’s get to the recipe, shall we?

Baked Spaghetti Sauce (see full printable recipe below)

  • 4 bell peppers – I like to use one green, one red, one yellow and one orange
  • 3-4 carrots
  • 1 large onion
  • 4 cloves of garlic – crushed
  • 1 large bottle of V8
  • 1 large can tomato sauce
  • 1 large can tomato juice
  • 1 small can of tomato paste
  • 1 family pack of ground hamburger meat
  • your spices of choice – I use Italiano, Parsley, Mrs. Dash, Goya Adobo, Tex Mex seasonings, red pepper flakes, salt and pepper

Baked Spaghetti Sauce

The first thing you will need to do is cook the hamburger meat. Because of the size of the family pack, you most likely have to do it in batches since there is so much of it! I like to add spices to the meat while I am cooking it, so it absorbs some of the flavor. Go ahead and add your favorite seasonings. Keep in mind, this creates a LARGE batch of spaghetti sauce AND you will be straining the meat so don’t worry too much about over-seasoning at this point.

As the meat is cooking, it’s time to chop up your veggies. I find easier and quicker to use a hand chopper to cut up the vegetables, this way they are all roughly the same size.

SIDE NOTE: If you have children who are picky about vegetables, you can absolutely puree the vegetables into the mix and they will never know they are in there!!!

2ND SIDE NOTE: Frozen vegetables also wok well in this mix!

In a LARGE OVEN SAFE POT, you can start adding the other liquid ingredients. Add the uncooked vegetables and cooked and strained hamburger to the pot and mix well. This is also where you will add the other seasonings. I usually add about 3-4 tablespoons total of seasoning, however, as you stir it you will be able to adjust by adding more, if it is required.

Place the large pot into the oven at 350º for about 4 hours. I usually stir and taste test it every hour. Your house will smell scrumptious!

This is the result…

Add it to your favorite pasta and you have the perfect dish for a rainy or cold winter’s day! We have pasta night every Sunday in our house. This luscious Baked Spaghetti Sauce also makes a wonderful lasagna!

Once the sauce has cooled, I place the desired amount of spaghetti sauce into freezer bags and freeze them!
