Today, I will be sharing a Fun for All Strainer Activity, that’s great for both younger and older children! Always a hit, this activity is a simple and effective technique to help foster eye-hand coordination and fine motor skills. What is eye-hand coordination you ask? Well, eye-hand coordination means coordinating control of eye and hand movements. Basically, it is when your eyes and hands work together to accomplish a task. Another good example is when you catch a ball. Your eyes, see the ball approaching which tells your hands to reach out and catch as it gets closer. Now lets get to the activity description.
This is what I used for this activity.
Fun for All Strainer Activity
- anti-slip liner (not shown in above picture)
- 1 strainer (any size will work)
- artificial flowers
If you are a regular reader, you will know that I like to set up the activity in beautiful ways in order to invite the child to come and play with it. Once a child has played with it, and it is in shambles, I set up the activity again for the next child in the same way! This activity is great in a daycare setting as well. I usually set it up for 4 children, each with their own materials. I set the strainer out on the tray, that would be sitting on the anti-slip liner, along with individually cut artificial flowers, just what I could find lying around, nothing fancy. The goal of this activity is to place the individual flowers into the various holes of the strainer. This is where the eye-hand coordination comes in. The eyes have to work with the hands in order to get the stem of the flower into the holes of the strainer. So you get something like this…
There is no right or wrong way to place the flowers. The child will simply arrange them in the order they wish. One thing to note, check out the strainer holes and the stems of the flower size to ensure that they fit. The strainer that I used had different hole sizes so I removed the flowers with a thicker stem and that wouldn’t fit to minimize any frustration.
Here is a variation of this activity. If you do not have any flowers, pipe cleaners are a great alternative! They are pliable, colorful and soft. You can keep the pipe cleaners full length or cut them into shorter pieces.
Consider this activity for an older child as well. Presenting it as a game to an older child is a great idea. The goal of this game is to place both ends of the pipe cleaners through the holes and over other pipe cleaners WITHOUT the pipe cleaners touching! GAME ON!
Voilà! The Fun for All Strainer Activity is a low cost activity, suitable for both a very young to older age ranges! Have fun with it!
