Mom’s Life Changing BBQ Sauce recipe is exactly what this recipe is! LIFE CHANGING! It is a recipe that was passed down from my mother-in-law many years ago and I promise you, once you get a taste for it, you will never go back to store bought BBQ sauce!
It is zippy, tangy and rich! It is an all encompassing sauce. The flavors that come through and blend beautifully! It’s wonderfully top notch sauce pairs well with chicken, pork, beef and most definitely french fries! It is so tremendously universal!
There is actually a funny that goes along with this extraordinary BBQ sauce recipe! When it was given to me, the ingredients were all included, however, the cooking instructions weren’t! One afternoon, I decided to attempt making the sauce for the first time to surprise my husband!
I combined all the liquid ingredients and spices in a huge pot and noticed that the recipe called for onions and celery. I naturally assumed that they must be diced into minuscule pieces as I had never noticed them in the sauce before!!! So, that is what I did. I diced everything so small, they were almost pureed!
Voilà! I did notice that although it smelled right, the texture and consistency was somewhat unusual! Regardless, I stood proudly beside it when my hubby arrived home!
He looked at it. Smelled it. Swirled it around in the pot! “Did you cook it?” then left his lips! I read and re-read the recipe and no where did it mention it should have been cooked!!! GASP!
He then asked if I had added the celery and onion. I noted that I diced everything up really fine and added it to the sauce like everything else. With a little snicker under his breath, he lovingly mentioned that the sauce needed to cook for about an hour or so AND the celery and onion usually went in whole so the flavors could be absorbed but then they could easily be removed once the sauce was done cooking!
Being the good husband, he helped me right my wrongs! He turned on the burner and later helped me strain the almost pureed celery and onions chunks out of the sauce, once it was finished cooking! It did turn out alright for my first attempt and I, thankfully, have since mastered it!
This is a story that remains to be one that we all snicker at from time to time!!
